It's as clear as mud! Neatly summed up by it looks like Luke is George in 1861!

Two name swapping brothers always makes life easy.

I don't know if it helps, but John named his first born son George. As we know, the first born is often named after the father.

What do you think about the 1851 entry. Are those the children of Luke and/or George? And where are the parents?

If Luke/George remarried then presumably Mary HARRIS or Rebekah HILLIAR has died. If so the record eludes me.

I think that Rebecca Hillier was baptised 1817 Corsham and possibly died Chippenham RD in 1843.

So presumably Henry is another brother or close relative. There is a marriage in Lacock on 29 Nov 1841 between Henry KING and Mary PEGLER. Henry's father is John KING, Luke KING is a witness.

My apologies - I see you already have the wedding.

If the children in 1851C belong to Henry King and Mary PEGLER, it raises two questions:

 1) where were their parents in 1851? - we know Henry was dead in 1847, but his wife?
 2) where was George/Luke in 1851?

Mary KING was in the workhouse. Presumably King née PEGLER.

I think Mary was also in the workhouse with a daughter Sarah whose father could be doubtful if Henry had died in 1847

Sorry Rosie but I am finding it difficult to keep track. Does this summary make sense:

1844 John King born in Corsham to Luke KING and Mary HARRIS

1851 John King not located. Mary Pegler and her children are in the workhouse following Henry's death. George has remarried and is in Westbury. Luke not located

1861 Luke is now calling himself George. He is in Clifton with John and the other children

1871 Luke (now George) and John are in London.

PS when I get a chance I will try and put a tree together to make sense of all of this
