Samuel BOYD
« on: Tuesday 19 December 23 12:41 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if any of you with expertise in military records can help me find out about Samuel BOYD.

All I know about him is that he was a private in the 12th Foot, serving in Gibraltar in 1826. I only know this because I came accross a baptism record in the GRO Army Birth Indices Indices (1796-1880) for Mary Ann BOYD, who was born in Gibraltar on 01 Nov 1826 and baptised there on 06 Note 1826. Her father is named as Private Samuel BOYD, 12th Regt and her mother as Catherine BOYD.

In order to progress, I think I need to know more about Samuel.

It appears that his service record has not survived.

Ancestry has an 1818 muster book/paylist entry for him which records that he was with 1st Battalion of the 12th Foot, then based in Limerick. There will be more of these type of records at the National Archives.

Probably unrelated but I did notice a marriage of a Samuel Boyd to Caterin Clarke on 12 April 1816 in Ireland on FamilySearch :-\ https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QGDV-PNGG

Shaun - that's interesting. Would the TNA records for him be online or require a visit?

Kay - it could be relevant, but I have no idea how to verify that it is the same person.

With a few exceptions the muster books and paylists at TNA have not been digitised so it would mean a visit if you want to search them. Here for instance is the catalogue entry for 1st Battalion of the 12th Foot for 1825/6:
