It might be that because Eliza’s children still had a father who could theoretically provide for them, he thought he was better to support his widowed daughter in law by giving all to her son.

Or, it could be that eldest son of the eldest son thing…..

Thank you minniehaha, particularly for confirming no deaths on the voyage confirming that Amelia made it to NZ. I have recently found out that Amelia's grand daughter had 2 other sons as well as Sedman Arthur, both born in NZ in the 1920's and as possibly still living I give no details.

Just to close another door, shanreagh at reply no 4 mention an Ann Frampton who d 1905. Find my grave has a picture of her grave and family details and she is clearly not Amelia.
