Betting shops in Liverpool
« on: Wednesday 20 December 23 16:13 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
Does anyone remember the name of a string of betting shops in Liverpool. This would be around the sixties or seventies. They may have been bought out by the big two; William Hill and Ladbrokes, or possibly Joe Coral.
                                 Many Thanks

There was a bookmakers called William Forbes Ltd -- I don't know how many shops they had.

Another possibility -- newspaper adverts in the 70s all mentioned branches indicating that there were a number of betting shops. (snippet image, Liverpool Echo, 10 May 1976 courtesy of Find My Past)

Looking at my 1970 Kellys directory, there were hundreds of betting shops (Turf Accountants) in Liverpool. The largest chain was W J Connor Ltd.

By exchange of PMs we have narrowed the location to Roe Street.  Bernard Murphy & Son Ltd had a branch there in the 1960s.
