Slaters & Buchanans Scotland or Ireland to NB, Canada
« on: Saturday 10 September 05 16:54 BST (UK) »
I have hit the proverbial brick wall with the origin of my g.g.g.grandfather, Thomas Slater, born 1826.  He came into St. John, Canada from Muff Parish, Drumskellan, Donegal County, Ireland. via Derry on the Londonderry 6 in 1851, settling in Westfield, Kings parish first. Here he worked in the MacKenzie household and met his future wife, Nancy Buchanan. He may have had 3 brother, Andrew, James and John, as they all had land right next to his and all from Drumskellan.

Thomas 1st married a woman by the name of Nancy Buchanan in New Brunswick and had children:
Kate
David
Thomas
Ella
Edith
Alice                                            Annie

Thomas II married Katherine Buchanan in NB and had:
John Edwin
Meta
Ada May
Lillian Alberta  (my g.grandmother)
Thomas Clifford (also called just Clifford)

**Here is a large key in this......Thomas Ist married a Buchanan, his son Thomas II married a Katherine Hastings Buchanan, and James Slater named his son Thomas Buchanan Slater. Seems coincidental, or could they be cousins? The Buchanans and Slaters lived close to one another in New Brunswick as well.

The Buchanans are also being searched. From Scotland??
Mathew Buchanan married Mary Kerr  (both fromIreland)
Had children:
Kate (Buchanan- Slater) Thomas II
George T. (Annie Edith Harrison)
James William (Mary Shellhouse)
Margaret (Maggie) not married?
Lillie (Lillian Buchana-Givens)
Mary (Buchanan-Dean)
Ida (Buchanan-Comstock)
Bessie (Buchanan-Freeman)
Most moved from New Brunswick to South Shore of Massachusetts

Need to have confirmation of where first Thomas Slater came from as well as any family members left behind in Ireland. Also any Slaters in Canada directly related to any of the brothers.

The info on the Vital Records CD lists the parents of Thomas and Andrew as being Thomas Slater and Jane Graham. Not sure on this at all. Help?

I would appreciate any info people can give me!
Thank you!!

First of all, remove your email address, although it is probably too late to avoid spamming...
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=census/search_census.asp
Your 1st family is in the 1881 for N.B. and Thomas (b 1828) says that he was born in Ireland...although it says the next Thomas is born 1862 ...
But this is your family as the children are listed in similar fashion although David
is the eldest, and your list misses an Annie...

I suggest posting your questions on the Ireland board for earlier ...
and for the other questions try the emmigration to Canada site...
Good luck, J.J.

(P.S. there is also a death date for the second Thomas in ancestral file)

There are all your 2nd  families births here, under the name of Thomas Slater  as father, including a new one, Clifford Thomas...!
Your Thomas Clifford is down as a female! There is also one with a Catherine B. as mother, her name is May so you'll want to check that one out, even though the mother called herself Kate in the others....

The same site has     Births 101   Marriages 42   Deaths 35   for Slater surname
so you can look at them individually and see who's who, also....
they also feature the mother's name, a super addition!

Thank you for your efforts. I have searched the Archives until I am blue in the face. And May is Ada May Slater, daughter to Thomas Slater II and Kate Buchanan.

Surprised I missed on mentioning Annie Elizabeth, thanks for reminding me. If I can edit, I will. Thanks also for the email tip. So far, people have been very respectful in that manner, but perhaps I will remove it. I have contacted a number of Slaters still in New Brunswick.

Now to search for the surviving Buchanans. This should be interesting.....

Thanks again,
Joy

To modify, just hit the modify button, change & save...
I looked back up and saw that Annie is there, but way off to the right for
some reason...perhaps you preformatted in another program & something
went "BOING" when pasted...anyway, sorry this wasn't any help to you...
Perhaps someone on the immigration to canada can find something for you?

For living relatives, there is always Canada 411   http://www.canada411.ca/

All the best, J.J.

O.k....I am sure you have been through all this...but there is a Thomas Slater
born 1826, listed on the 1901 census, who says years of immigration to canada
was in "1840".  He is with a Dora, 44 years or so his junior....who is down as wife.
and a James and a John, born N.B. lodging...This is a carleton N.B. listing but
just wondering about the exact dates of birth if not he...

Wow, I see that you have added some information today to the top of the
thread...  J.J.
