Fanny Morton, possibly Longford, Carrick, Clonmel areas
« on: Thursday 21 December 23 14:58 GMT (UK) »
Fanny Morton, born 1823 (ish) Longford, Clonmel, Carric-on-Suir area, sister to Johnston and daughter to Edward. I'm at my wits end trying to find anything about the time in her life before her marriage to John Williams in 1848 in Carrick-on-Suir. I have no idea about finding birth or baptism records for the areas where she may have been born and I know nothing of her mothers name. Her father is recorded on her marriage certificate to John Williams as a Wood Ranger and on her brothers Marriage certificate to Clarinda Gellately of 1848 in Clonmel as a Gate Keeper. If anyone has any ideas to help me I would appreciate any assistance to locate her birth baptism or her parents wherabouts. Thanks

Just adding the URL links to the marriages-

Fanny Morton - Carrick-on-Suir - 12 September 1848
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1848/09344/5383497.pdf

Johnston Morton - Clonmel - 4 September 1848
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1848/09346/5383960.pdf

Quote
Her father is recorded on her marriage certificate to John Williams as a Wood Ranger and on her brothers Marriage certificate to Clarinda Gellately of 1848 in Clonmel as a Gate Keeper.

Two marriages - father's occupation mixed up.
In Clonmel, wood ranger. In Carrick-on-Suir, gate keeper.

Note- Fanny's marriage in the Church of Ireland, Johnston's marriage in the Presbyterian Church..

Hi, Thanks for the information and links, which I have seen. That is the earliest record I can find on either sibling, I would like to find a baptism record for each of them assuming the parents were of a. religious belief. The clue might be they are of non catholic denomination having married in a Presbyterian and a protestant church. The fathers occupation bears no resemblance to Johnstons assertion on his marriage certificate to my Gt Grandmother Ellen Harrison in Liverpool, that his father was a Sergeant in The Irish Constabulary, this seems to be an attempt to raise his status and quite erroneous as having contacted Jim Herily the authority on the IC, there is no record of an Edward Morton serving with the Police force. Thanks again for your reply

An account of the Waterford County Quarter Sessions in the Waterford Chronicle of 7 January 1843 confirms that there was indeed a wood ranger named Edward Morton, he was examined as a witness in a case of theft of a fir tree belonging to the Marquess of Waterford.

Wood ranger and gate keeper aren't entirely incompatible, they suggest that Edward may have had a career working on one or more landowners' estates.

Hi

Griffiths Valuation of Waterford took place 1848-51 and the Parish of Clonagam shows Edward Morton with a House, Office and small Garden.  Lessor is the Marquis of Waterford.  The link below shows these details and also provides a link to the relevant Map.

From a transcript...

'Clonegam' Church of Ireland parish, 12 February 1843, a Samuel Thomas Morton was baptised for parents Edward and Martha Morton, there is also a comment to suggest that this Edward was a 'gamekeeper at Curraghmore'.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curraghmore

https://www.ihh.ie/index.cfm/houses/house/name/Curraghmore

I'm wondering if this might be Edward the father of Johnston and Fanny, or a son to Edward and sibling to Johnston and Fanny, also, since this is a transcript, could it maybe have been a mistranscription of gatekeeper?

All a bit nebulous, but just to note anyway.

Someone called Johnston Morton was witness to two marriages in 'Clonegam' Church of Ireland parish church in 1849: (1) John Power and Bridget Fling on 22 October; (2) John Sullivan and Mary Finlay on 23 October - in all cases, residence was Portlaw (both marriages on same page below):
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1849/09364/5391297.pdf

Then on 21 April 1850, a Johnston Morton witnessed the marriage of Edward Egan and Catherine McGrath, same church as above, same residence for the bride and groom:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1850/09384/5399138.pdf

Likewise, a Johnston Morton witnessed the marriage of Thade McCarty and Anne Ryan on 15 July 1850, the same church and the same residence for the bride and groom:

All I'm really saying here is that a fairly distinctive name like Johnston Morton provides more assurance that this may be the right geography (ie. Curraghmore Estate, Portlaw area, 'Clonegam' parish church) for these Morton folk at this time.

@Gaffy, and @LH thank you so much for the time in replies too my search, it seems to fit into place, Fanny married in Carrick 1848, Johnston was a witness at her marriage, Johnston was married in Clonmel to Clarinda Gellatley 1848, Carrick is a few miles from Curraghmore, its looking likely and has set me on a new exciting path, Thanks. Incidentally I undertook the Ancestry DNA test in hope to assist my quest and despite the presence of Irish forebears they detected zero Irish origins.
