Updating satnav maps
« on: Saturday 23 December 23 12:01 GMT (UK) »
I have a desktop PC and a Samsung tablet.
I don't have a laptop.
I am thinking of getting a new satnav. One has map updates with USB.
The other more expensive with Wifi and USB.
Would a tablet be able to download maps with Wifi or would I be wasting my money.
Thanks.

Just looked at the tomtom classic £99 at halfo..s, it seems in can connect directly to your Wi-Fi without any sort of intermediate device.
Just follow the instuctions on the screen,it says.

The fun bit is getting it connected to your Wi-Fi, can you remember the passwords for your Wi-Fi.

Having said that there are so few new roads being built in the Uk that I have not updated mine for ages.

I’m sure others will have helpfull ideas as well

I should have added that if you go and buy a new one it may have been in stock for years packed in its little box and be hopelessly out of date.

Buy a SatNav which has free lifetime updates.

I had a Garmin specifically on my Motorcycle and simply plugged it into my Computer to update its maps or to transfer Routes created on the Software installed on my Computer.

If you have a Smart Phone you do not necessarily need a SatNav as an App like Waze gives that functionality plus it gives Live Traffic.

My car has inbuilt SatNav but if we are travelling any distance I use Waze as well so we can compare Traffic on both systems.

I have realised now that it's the satnav itself that has wifi, silly me.
Thanks everyone.  ::)

Updating maps is not the only thing to consider. I have an old Tomtom which has connection to the web and can also connect to my home network for map and traffic updates. Trouble is its battery is knackered and it takes a while to “warm up”.
I also have a newer Tomtom which does not connect to the internet so if I want it to update in real time I have to use my phone as a hotspot. Good enough to get traffic updates while travelling. I ensure maps and traffic are up to date before I leave home.
Short trips are not a problem but if you are going any distance then the live traffic updates can warn you of major holdups which have occurred since you set off. Thus you might be saved from heading into a big jam on a motorway which could hold you up for hours.
