Is it Rpt (rupture?) of family (union)? Abandoning his wife and perhaps children?

Press notice 3 March 1911  Todmordon and District News

Two Months for Desertion

Albert J Norton labourer Cornholme - made another appearance in the dock on account of maintenance arrears in respect of his wife and family.
The relieving officer said the case was adjourned a month ago when the defendant promised to discharge the expenses which had been incurred at 2s weekly.  Defendent had been absent from his wife and three children (the third being born a month after his desertion) for two years and 7 months over which time the defendant recieved £29 8s 6p parish relief.  He had been living with his wife during the last month and  she had apparantly kept the whole family by weaving

The Chairman said the defendant did not seem to be making any attempt to discharge his obligations and  he would be sentanced to two months hard labour.
