John E Jones - Corris/Llanelltyd/Bontddu
« on: Monday 25 December 23 22:15 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I've come to a dead end in my family tree and really struggling to find out any information.

I'm researching my great great grandfather John Edward Jones (born August 8th 1874) in Corris. He later married Catherine Ellis (born Feb 26th 1880). They married on 28th of May 1909 in Rohoboth Islaw'rdref and their address is listed as Tyn Y Coed Tyrnol, Llanelltyd, I have all of this information on their marriage certificate. John Edward Jones's father is called John Jones and is listed as deceased on the marriage certificate in 1909. There is also a Ruth Jones listed as witnessing the marriage however I'm unsure whether it's a mother or sibling! They later moved to Caegwian farm Bontddu as found in the 1939 register. I also found his record of his death in a newspaper as 7 of June 1946 and leaving everything to his wife Catherine.

Other than that I cannot find any information about John Edward Jones that will help me trace further back - I'm looking for birth record, baptism, census. The only information I have is the marriage certificate, 1911 census (Census Reference - RG14PN34313 RG78PN1981 RD627 SD2 ED23 SN62), 1921 census (district reference - RD 627 RS 2 ED 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16) and 1939 register (archive reference - RG101/7644H/003/10)

Thanks so much!

The only one I can find in 1901 was visiting Lewis Edwards in Corris, with his assumed brother, William.

However, in 1881-91, they both seem to be sons of Edward Jones.

Is there an occupation for his father?

My ancestors used to live at Caegwian, spelled incorrectly in 1921, although much earlier.

Hi David,

Thanks so much.

Both John Edward Jones and his father John Jones were farmers I believe.

I believe I’d seen that one but wasn’t sure whether the age aligned correctly with his date of birth. I hadn’t seen the photograph, thanks for sharing!

John Jones, of Ty'n y COed, Llanelltyd, buried May 17 1905 aged 70

Certified by Owen Lloyd Owen, Bontddu

No officiating vicar named

Basically these two entries mean they were non conformists, but buried in the local parish church by their own Minister. The "new" Act that allowed this being passed in 1880  - certified I think meaning that someone had to give notice to the vicar that this was going to happen

Brother Hugh died in 1910 in a mining accident in Mardy (Rhondda) but was buried back in Llanelltyd

https://newspapers.library.wales/view/3170967/3170972/30/%22hugh%20jones%22%20AND%20llanelltyd

His wife was called Jane - she appeared to have stayed in Llanelltyd in 1901 whilst Hugh went south to work and is still at Tai Cynhauaf in 1911
