William TWADDLE, writer in Edinburgh
« on: Tuesday 26 December 23 06:03 GMT (UK) »
He and Ann TWADDLE had children in Edinburgh 1804-1822.
He was listed in directories as William TWEEDELL in Edinburgh 1807-1812.
1841 census William TWADDLE writer* aged 60 in St Cuthbert’s Workhouse, Edinburgh, not born in the County (so born circa 1777-1781 Scotland)
1844 William TWEDDLE died in the Workhouse, aged 60 (so born 1783-1784)
*Occupation = writer (a solicitor or legal clerk)

William is my brick wall, having searched ScotlandsPeople, ScotlandsPlaces, newspapers, Edinburgh & Glasgow university alumni, Edinburgh burgess rolls, St Cuthbert's Kirk Sessions.
Workhouse records don’t survive, unfortunately, and DNA has revealed no relevant matches.

Hi sstenning

I can only see children for William and Ann up to 1815 rather than 1822 on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

1804 - William
1807 - Robert
1809 - Agnes
1811 - Jane
1815 - William (first must have died young)

Was wondering if the names of the children would give you any clues for William and Ann's parents.

Monica

Thank you Monica.

These are the only births I could find, but a Charlotte Twaddle died in 1878 aged 56, and was buried with her sister Agnes Lewis, nee Twaddle (confirmed as the one born in 1809), whom she names in her will. In the 1861 and 1871 censuses at Burton in Pembrokeshire, Wales her year of birth is around 1822 in Edinburgh. I also cannot find the burial of the first son, William.

I agree that the children's names could be clues to the names of their grandparents, but have not found any likely candidates.

Could William Twaddle have been married twice?

.... On the other hand, his age in the census and burial means he was not old enough to marry in 1791.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thank you Forfarian. These are the correct births, but I agree the 1793 one would make their father too young.

Sorry, the 1791 birth.
