Siblings in the Workhouse
« on: Tuesday 26 December 23 07:25 GMT (UK) »
My great, great, great grandmother, Catherine Fitzpatrick (born Kilpatrick) was put admitted to the Liverpool Workhouse on 5 August 1861, with some of her siblings (Patrick, Jane and Hugh) they were the youngest children in the family, the elder siblings aren't listed. Patrick was admitted to the school ward, the others to the cleansing ward.

Catherine and Jane were discharged on 25 January 1862, and Patrick on 1 February 1862 to the same location, see the image. The second word is school, but I'm not sure about the first. Hugh, the youngest, was discharged on 20 May 1862 to his aunt, but I don't know her name.

Their mother Margaret died in August 1860, and I think their father was still alive until at least 1865. Why were they discharged to a school? Why didn't their father take them back? Why weren't the older siblings in the workhouse? What is this "school" they were discharged to?

If anyone can help answer any of my questions or give me anymore help and information, I would be very grateful!

Thank you.  :)

I think this may be the family, garstonite, transcribed as ‘Kilpatrick’ on Anc. I can’t find them on Family Search or Free Cen.

Familysearch 1861 has James as Kil Patrick and the rest of the family as Patrick.  Thanks for the reference heywood, it helped me find it on FindMyPast which has the same transcript ;D

Why were they discharged to a school?

By this date it was recognised by poor law unions in the big cities that pauper children were better educated outside the workhouse, in separate establishments, away from the influence of adult paupers.

Why didn't their father take them back?

He may not have been able to care for them properly on his own if he was working.

Why weren't the older siblings in the workhouse?

By the age of 13/14 they would be considered adults of working age and would have been expected to find employment.

What is this "school" they were discharged to?

Probably the Kirkdale Industrial School. Good description and images here ...
