WWI service numbers and enlisting date

I'm looking at the medal card for Lewis M Campbell which bears the service details: 1st Scots Guards 13693, PTE. Royal Engineers 312253.
The person to whom this refers, I think, is a Lewis McGibbon Campbell who was born in Bothwell, Lanarkshire on November 1st 1901. I know boys did enlist underage, but this seems as if he may have joined at 16 or younger. Do the service numbers give any indication of the date of enlistment, and was it unusual for a guards member to join the RE?

The service numbers relate to a Lewis McMinn Campbell born in Kilmarnock circa 1894/5. He married Maud Susannah Howard in 1916.
