Help in deciphering birthplace
« on: Wednesday 27 December 23 12:09 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking at George Parker born approx 1791.  In the 1851 census living in Ebrington, Gloucestershire Piece 2076 Folio 92 Page 6.
Birthplace is transcribed as Church Stanley, Gloucestershire.  I can't find a suitable place in Gloucestershire to match, can anyone help shed any more light on this?  Of course it might not be in Gloucs which would make it harder for this sub-board !

Could it relate to the two Stanley villages near Stroud - King's Stanley and Leonard Stanley  :-\  https://maps.nls.uk/view/101453949#zoom=4&lat=3563&lon=4729&layers=BT   :-\ :-\

Am familiar with the other 2 places Kay has mentioned but not Church Stanley, perhaps it was a small hamlet that was absorbed into one of those.

If you could find his baptism that might help?

Was he around in 1861 or no?
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

Sadly he appears to have died pre 1861 and I can't see a baptism in the area at the moment

The 1891 census has a Charles PREW whose birthplace is given very clearly as Church Stanley. His baptism 26 Oct 1834 took place at Stanway Gloucestershire , son of James and Mary PREW. Their abode is given as Church Stanway . There is a baptism 22 Apr 1787 at Stanway for George PARKER , son of Richard and Anne PARKER which may be worth considering.

Well found - Stanway was also called Church Stanway to distinguish from the nearby Wood Stanway https://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/glos/vol6/pp223-232
