WW2 child refugees from Bradford
« on: Thursday 28 December 23 10:32 GMT (UK) »
My father has recently passed away and I am trying to trace some of his history. He was evacuated from a Bradford children's home to Nelson in Lancashire, probably in 1939. He was adopted after the war by the family he was placed with in Nelson. Does anyone have any suggestions where I may be able to trace which home he was in and evacuated from? I have already tried Bradford Archives without success and Nelson/Pendle council have no information.

Thank you

I'm sorry for your loss.

If you look at the family he was placed with in Nelson on the 1939 register, are there "closed" records with them? One might be him, and you could ask (with proof of death) for the record to be opened.

Here is one possible source for records from the Bradford area.

The 1939 entry is redacted, but I will ask for the record to be opened, thank you for the suggestion. I will also try the Bradford record you have suggested, thank you very much for the response

Lancashire has two tiers of local government. Pendle is one of the district councils, but many functions, including adoption, are carried out at county level by Lancashire County Council, which would be why Pendle couldn't help. (And if the adoption took place in Lancashire, Bradford wouldn't be able to help with that either, though they might have other records about his placement in a home.)

From the site jorose has linked to, this is the page for Lancashire:

Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson
