Ancestry DNA ISle of MAn
« on: Friday 29 December 23 06:59 GMT (UK) »
My name is Trevor Ellis from Sydney Australia and my Ancestry DNA says that 65% of my DNA is from Northern England including the Channel Islands and isle of Man. Can anyone please help me as I want to find my ancestors who lived there. My gg Grandfather John Ellis was born in Colne in 1802 but ho father was listed, only his mother, Ann Ellis. He was a convict and sent to Norfolk Island for 7 years.

regards

Trevor Ellis

A small correction ;)
The Channel Islands  are not in the North - they are in the South, actually closer to France than England.

OK, in 1565 an ancestor the Cosier family, my maternal side, left France to escape the Huguenot persecution. I am having trouble linking him to the rest of the Cosiers who were mainly storekeeps but is it possible he arrived via the Isle of Man?

It looks like more than one line. Paternal from N England / IOM - you said you had an ancestor born in Colne (Lancashire?)
Maternal - Huguenot from France - many ended up in Jersey / Guernsey CI.
Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
Sussex: Goodyer, Christopher, Trevatt
Lanark: Scott (soldier went to Jersey CI)
Jersey: Fowler, Huelin, Scott

Don’t focus too much on trying to match up your ethnic percentages with your nown ancestors ormpaper trail. It could end ip sending you in the wrong direction. Ethic oercentages are nothing more than a rough guide, and subject to change over time.

KGarrad will be able to confirm (or not) but I don’t think that anyone leaving France to go to England woild travel via the Isle of Man. Channel Islands, yes.

You obviously already have some knowledge of your family history, but it is not clear how much you know from what you have told us here. I would suggest putting the ethnicity estimates aside and concentrate on paper research and looking at your DNA matches to find connections. Hopefully some of the ethnicity percentages will become clearer as you expand your tree.

I think referring to a good map can be very useful when researching family history.

Good luck.

Not very likely!
Paris to Isle of Man, as the crow flies, is 833km.
Would require a sea crossing over English Channel or North Sea, then another sea crossing over the Irish Sea. And travel across England in between.
Sailing France to IOM, going around SW England, or around Scotland wouldn't have been practical.
Just check the geography/maps.

As I said in reply#3
Two separate lines
paternal Ellis - N England, which may or may not include IOM
maternal Cosier - French Huguenots to Channel Islands - reason: easy to get to from France, Protestant - speak same languager

Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
Sussex: Goodyer, Christopher, Trevatt
