Jane Houghton Wigan born 1877

I'm looking for Jane Houghton born 14 Aug 1977 ( from baptism) in Wigan to John Houghton a Pointsman and Jane Sedgewick.I can't see her on any census so I'm wondering if she died but can't find a death. I have her parents and siblings in 1881.

Thanks for this. I haven't seen the original record for James'death. I have a son James on the census born 1888,maybe they named a second James. The baptism I have for Jane in 1877 is on the 30th Sept. Giving her Birth as 14th Aug. Houghton is spelt Haughton but Father John has the same occupation as on the census a pointsman, could it be a coincidence?

Have you eliminated the 34yr old unmarried Jane Houghton on the 1911 census?  Sister of Thomas & Nancy Cropper

On the 1911 census, Jane says she has had 8 children, 4 are still living. I can see these births to the couple:

1872  Elizabeth Ann
1875  John Thomas
1877  James  (poss, died 1880)
1879  Margaret
1884  Hannah
1888  James
1890  Martha (died 1892)
1894  Martha (died 1895)

So one more child must have died before 1911. Will keep looking to see which one.

I think that though the baptism image says "Jane" in 1877, it should be "James" as on the birth registration.

There is a birth  for 'James' and a baptism for 'Jane' both in the same quarter 1877.  They can't both have been born at the same time unless they were twins and there is no evidence of that.  The error could be in either record, but more likely in the name on the baptism.

There is a death for a Margaret HOUGHTON in Wigan, aged 17 in 1894 - a bit old. Or another in 1899 aged 19 which sound more like a possible death for the daughter of John and Jane. Difficult to guess, as it's a reasonably common name.

The GRO index has a male entry for a JAMES (with mmn SEDGWICK) registered in Wigan in 1877, but no such entry for a female JANE.

As Debra has suggested - possibly the baptism name is faulty.
