Linnhall, Tundergarth, Lockerbie
« on: Friday 29 December 23 22:59 GMT (UK) »
Hello, my ancestors are the Smith family who lived in Linnhall / Lairdholm farms from the late 1780's to 1860's.

I wondered if anyone had any images or details or history about the location.

This is my rough timeline:

06.10.1786
For sale - Linhall, Lairdholm and Ravenshill as William Johnstone had died.
Sold - Linhall Farm at Lairdholm by the widow Johnstone.

18.08.1793
William Smith daughter, Janet born at Linnhall

28.11.1797
Let by Mr Smith of Langshaw?
William Johnstone to show boundaries.

26.05.1803
Benjamin Smith daughter, Maria born Linhall

1841
Census lists John & Helen Smiths (born on Middlebie) in Linhall

1848 to 1858?
William Smith lived in Linnhall at Lairdholm. This was described as a couple of cottages with gardens attached at Lairdholm Burnside. They are sometimes called "Lairdholm" from an old farmhouse of that name that stood not far from there.

1852
Maps show Scroggs Estate owned by William Johnson next to Rosebank north of the River of Milk.
Land also marked as Lands of Linns and Lands of Linnhead.

1861
Census lists John & Helen Smith in Linhall and Alexander Smith (born in Applegarth) at Lairdholm

1939
Thompson family

2018
Mountain Daisy Flower Farm

The Valuation Rolls at www.scotlandspeople https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/advanced-search/valuation-rolls#record-type record that in 1855 the proprietor of Linnhall and Lairdholm was Doctor Bell and the tenant and occupier was John Smith.

From 1862 the proprietor is listed as William Bell and the tenant was still John Smith.

In 1887 the proprietor is Andrew Jardine Esq, but the index doesn't make it clear who the tenant was.

To find out exactly who owned Linhall and Lairdholm when, you could consult the Registers of Sasines. These, however, are not available online. You would need to go, or to get someone to go on your behalf, to the National Records of Scotland in Edinburgh. You could hire a professional searcher via https://www.asgra.co.uk/ if you can't go yourself.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Many thanks for the quick response and detail.

That would tally with my details. As the John Smith died 01.06.1865
