ON-LINE SPEAKER is JANET FEW with a talk entitled ‘DOXIES, DOLLYMOPS & DRESSMAKERS - A HISTORY OF PROSTITUTION’.
What might suggest someone in your family tree worked as a prostitute? What records might help you learn more about her?
This talk looks at the history of prostitution in Britain from 1780-1930 including society’s attitudes to those who sold sexual favours, the legislation that impacted upon them, and the work of those who tried to reform ‘fallen’ women.
Janet Few is an experienced family, social and community historian. She is a qualified family historian who has provided Dorset FHS with a number of interesting talks in the past. Find out more about Janet on
