Conway-help
« on: Sunday 31 December 23 11:46 GMT (UK) »
Hello all,

I’ve started tracing family history and realised what an interesting journey it is… back to the 1400’s on one side.

But there is one bit that is a struggle as my mum didn’t know her dad but there is a name on her wedding certificate and I’ve traced it to censuses as it’s quite unusual.  Would you leave it or keep digging?  The dates seem to work out!

Any advice appreciated.

If your mother didn’t know her father then she can’t have named him on her marriage cert - unless your wording is misleading & you mean she knew his name but didn’t know the person

Hello, sorry yes she had the name but didn’t physically know him.  The name is on her birth and marriage certificate and she has had his surname throughout her life.

But I guess it was very easy back then to have whatever name you wanted, very little checks!

With the same name on birth and marriage certificates, there is a pretty good chance it is correct.
If it was me, I would want to know more, and I would definitely keep digging.

I just don’t know where to really start as his name comes up on the census.

That guy has passed away now but don’t want to go on a wild goose chase so appreciate the feedback as I have only two day’s experience in family history searching!!

Can you post details (ie) full name/birthyear etc & also what location is involved - England or elsewhere

Were the parents married?

We are willing to help, if we can. :)
As Carole says, post as much detail as you have.

Thank you to everyone who commented so far! 😀. Nice people!

The name was Hugh Conway, I’d say born in 1920’s.  There is only one I can find who was in the north west of England then!

Always a little part of me was intrigued not knowing who my grandfather is.
