Abraham Cookery, bc.1812, Bristol
« on: Monday 01 January 24 17:02 GMT (UK) »
I need help finding Abraham Cookery, a cabinet maker from Bristol, born c.1812

There are records of Abraham Cookery being convicted of highway robbery in 1840, and his subsequent detention on a prison hulk until pardoned in Nov 1845.

In one convict record from 1840 he is said to be from St George's Bristol, age 28, a cabinet maker, married, last place of abode Lawrence Hill in Bristol, one child.

The name Cookery seems to be correct, inasmuch as it's record in quite legible handwriting in places and also reporte as such in the newspapers of the time. Of course, just because Abraham gave his name as Cookery, doesn't mean that was true I suppose.

I can find no other record of him in Bristol, or anywhere else. I'd be grateful for any help with this.

Thanks.

The 1840 offence was for assault & robbery - 10yrs transportation - removed to the Stirling Castle hulk at Devonport 16.11.1840

He is shown as 26yrs old so born approx 1814??

I’m not convinced his surname was Cookery. Cooke**. The letter after e is not r if you look at others on the same page. There is then another letter before y

I'm not sure it's Cookery either, although that's how it appeared in the newspaper report of his conviction.

I saw the 1841 census already, thanks.

So is there any evidence of him before the trial and conviction?
