Info in convict records
« on: Monday 01 January 24 17:29 GMT (UK) »
I found a record describing a convict sent to Tasmania from England about 1841. At the bottom there's a line for 'Remarks' but I don't know what the info given means. The person in question was born c.1811 so maybe that's what the numbers refer to? Grateful for your help with this.

Agree with Rosie. I have a number of convicts with tattoos. The letters and numbers usually refer to important people and dates in their lives (family members, sweethearts/spouses, births, deaths, anniversaries--whatever may have seemed important to them at the time).

I see that he was 31 y.o. in 1841 so perhaps the 1811 on the ? tattoo is the year of his birth with the initials of his parents?

Yes, I think that's correct. Well spotted!
