help needed - Jane Nevitt parents
« on: Monday 01 January 24 17:37 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I'm hoping someone here with more experience in Welsh records can help me. My 5x great grandmother is Jane Nevitt born 15th August 1793 in Wrexham, Denbighshire, Baptised on 27th September 1793. Her father was James and mother was Elizabeth

Jane married James Hankey on 4th May 1812 in Chester, Cheshire, England

Their children were
Maria born 1813 Wrexham
Charles 1815 Wrexham
James 1815 Wrexham
Jane 1820 Liverpool
George 1823 Liverpool
Grace 1826 Liverpool
John 1834 Liverpool

I can't find any record (birth, marriage or death) of James and Elizabeth in Wales or England, any help tracing them would be appreciated.

It looks likely that Jane was an only child?

I see that is from the Nat Lib of Wales Marriage Bond collection so it is the record of a marriage bond* granted by the Bishop of St Asaph as part of granting a licence. The marriage date would not necessarily be on that date(and might have not happened). Also it could take place in any place in the diocese, which is quite large.

I've checked the parish records that I have access to and, so far, can't find an actual marriage.

There was a James Nevitt baptised in St Mary on the Hill, Chester in March 1786. His father is named as James.

Quote
Marriage bonds and allegations only exist for couples who applied to marry by licence.
They do not exist for couples who married by banns.
• The marriage allegation was the document in which the couple alleged (or frequently just
the groom alleged on behalf of both of them) that there were no impediments to the
marriage.
• The marriage bond set a financial penalty on the groom and his bondsman (usually a close
friend or relative) in the case the allegation should prove to be false

thanks Gadget, will look into this further, Jane born 1793 was born in Wales and i assume both her parents were Welsh. I'm basing this on dna results that strongly suggest a full Welsh ancestor at around this time.

I don't think  that the DNA calculations of ethnicity are 100% accurate as I've been variously 90%, 85%, 80% Welsh by Ancestry . It's really more of a range than an actual amount. Also, when I was looking for the Nevits (various spellings), I did find quite a few in Chester.

My Welsh ancestors are predominantly from that area of North East Wales and there was quite a lot of movement between Cheshire and Shropshire and Denbighshire and Flintshire.

If I had to guess which of the couple was most probably Welsh, I'd say Elizabeth Roberts :)

On a lighter note, I gather that the Chester Football Club ground is half in Wales and half in England  ;D

PS - I was confirmed by the Bishop of St Asaph

Take a look at this useful site by Jill  Rose.
Nevett is listed under Knight because of many variations.
James Nevett aged 61 buried Wrexham 22 May 1808 Inn keeper Kings Mills.
Ancestry has him as Revett.

Baptisms of the Hankey children in Wrexham.
Maria 1813 Abenbury Fechan.  Father James Hankey is a farmer
James 1814 Wrexham Regis. Father James Hankey is a maltster.
Charles 1816 Holt . Father James Hankey is an innkeeper

There is a connection with inn keeping.
Kings Mills is in Abenbury,  the only pub there at that time was the Red Lion, still open.
Wrexham Regis covered Kings Mills and parts of Abenbury.

I can't see a burial in Wrexham for Elizabeth.
Could she have moved to Liverpool.
Of course this is all based on coincidence. 🙂
