Calgary Soldiers' War Memorial
« on: Wednesday 03 January 24 15:15 GMT (UK) »
Hoping someone would be able to photograph the panel showing the name of
William John Russell Rowles who died 22 October 1917.
The memorial was erected in 2011 in Calgary, Alberta.
Thank you for looking.

Sad that these young lads did not get to have their own families.  He states on attestation born in Calgary...he & his family were in Vancouver, B.C. at the time of his signup and his parents are recorded as being there at the time of his death. He was also fighting with a Saskatchewan battalion.
   They're in Gladys, Alberta in 1901-he's down as Russel J. - b.  Dec. 5 1898- age 2
1906 -Calgary Dist. as Wm. Jno. Don't see them in 1911
adding 1921 just because for some reason Rowles was hard to spell? (as Rolles )

adding...to see the full military file in the previous post's url, just hit the pdf.
The Calgary memorial is dedicated to the war dead of Calgary's Army Reserve Regiments, and the Regiments that they perpetuate...
To help commemorate him virtually, photos , etc. can be submitted here:

   &  here:  http://www.rootschat.com/links/01szw/
Someone has added his newspaper report with an image of the lad.
He was attending University, & originally signed up with 196th Western Universities Company Overseas Battalion ...so hoped to see him on the UBC War Memorial Gym plaque...
He's not on the 196 plaque. Argh! I guess because he was shoved into another battalion heading for the trenches.  https://open.library.ubc.ca/viewer/arphotos/1.0020602?v=oc
There is a larger plaque which may have his name, though. However, online image appears to only be a thumbnail image... useless to view in the low res. format provided. Maybe someone can get it to show the higher res. image it was obviously meant to have in the viewer.
