John PARRETT 13th Foot, died Gillingham 1858
« on: Thursday 04 January 24 01:04 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to establish whether or not this death is for my ancestor --John PARRETT b.1838, parents Robert and Elizabeth. Surrey

My man is correctly with family in 1841
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MQKZ-6BB

Also 1851 with family
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SGTQ-SZW

Searching  1861, I have not been able to find one of the correct spelling, correct birth place,  correct birth year.

I purchased the attached death certificate which shows a chap of about the right age dying at Garrison Hospital, Gillingham. A private in 13th Foot.

I need advice on where I may find records relating to this place and the 13th Foot.

Glad of any help.

Sue

Was John's mother's maiden name Evans? If so, his birth was registered as Ambrose John. Maybe he is still around somewhere in 1861, but using his full name.

As the death occurred in service, unfortunately any military records are unlikely to have survived.

I have had a hunt round with no success. He may be your man, but did you really mean he was your ancestor - he was 18 on the death certificate? With a name like Parrett, there could be many spelling variations.

I need advice on where I may find records relating to this place and the 13th Foot.

I think the place is probably Fort Pitt Garrison Hospital, which closed after WW1.

Any records would be at Medway Archives, but I don’t think any survive before 1917. You could email them and ask …
https://www.medway.gov.uk/info/200391/medway_archives_centre

As regards his army service, you should find him listed in the musters/paylists for the 13th Foot, held at the National Archives, e.g. WO 12/3071-3078, 3098 (for 1854-1858).
https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/results/r?_srt=1&_ep=13th+foot&_cr=WO+12&_dss=range&_sd=1854&_ed=1858&_ro=any&_st=adv

These records are not online and require personal access, by you or someone visiting on your behalf. While they're unlikely to give a place of birth, his place of attestation may give you a clue as to whether he is the right person. Whether that search would be worthwhile would depend on how central he is to your research.

Warmest thanks to all who have offered information and ideas.

Yes, his mother was nee EVANS. He was a brother of my great grandfather (so more correctly part of my ancestoral family ;D) and I have looked at the birth names Ambrose John possibility without luck.

It has been helpful to understand the location of possible records, but from Australia, not straightforward to visit and explore the Archives.

John's death will go into the "not sure " basket for now.
Thanks again.
