Robert POWER, Born 1834, Islington, London
« on: Thursday 04 January 24 15:52 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

Robert POWER arrived as a single lone migrant in New York aboard the Yorktown on 02/09/1850.   He was a Carpenter and settled in Hudson, Columbia, New York.   His parents were Robert and Mary POWER.

According to the US Army, Register of Enlistments, 1798-1914, [database on-line], he enlisted in the 5 Infantry Group (?) in New York on 25/11/1856,  but deserted on 23/06/1857.   And then I lose sight of him!!

I do hope someone can help.   Thank you.

BAC3

NB:   The name Robert POWER seems quite popular and around the same time there were two others, one actually born in Hudson and another in Waterford, Ireland.

Good Evening,

rosie17:   Thank you so much for those two items.   They do relate to the same person, I believe, which will help me investigate further.   Excellent research.

cath151:   I got quite excited when I discovered that reference myself.   But had to disregard it given he was an Engineer and not a Carpenter!!!

Thank you both once again.

Unless he enlisted again (quite possible), I wonder if he would have been allowed to stay in a soldiers home after deserting?

Was your Robert born in London?  If so, seems too coincidental for it to not be your man.

Added:. I didn’t notice the title of the posting until now.

Most likely the 5th Infantry

I didn’t see his name here, but perhaps he wasn’t buried in a military cemetery (especially if he didn’t re-enlist).

1860 New Orleans Ward 3, Orleans, Louisiana
Donald McDonald, 50, born Nova Scotia, Carpenter
Jane McDonald, 50, born New York
Rob Powers, 27 (born abt 1833) born England, Carpenter

I wonder if this could be the Robert referenced above?

According to the following website, the 5th Infantry was in South Florida in 1857.  They left the area in June 1857, headed to (modern day) Wyoming.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/5th_Infantry_Regiment_(United_States)

I wonder if the regiment sailed to Louisiana, on their way to Wyoming?  It would save time rather than going back up through Florida.  If so, perhaps Robert “left” when they arrived in New Orleans.
