8th January 1910
Soldiers Home
Age 77 years
A native of London England on family search

Might be worth checking out

Rosie

I found a newspaper site that has two “articles” for Robert.  I cannot view the entire articles (the left side is cut off) but it appears this Robert was in the 22nd Louisiana Regiment.  He did not have any “rela-” …possibly relatives?

Perhaps someone will come along who can provide the articles.

PS. I believe I’ve run across two individuals in the 1800s who deserted and later re-enlisted, so your fellow could have as well.

The regiment travelled to Vicksburg, Mississippi c1863.

Vicksburg is seven miles away from Warren County, Mississippi (where he may have been in 1880).

…According to the US Army, Register of Enlistments, 1798-1914, [database on-line], he enlisted in the 5 Infantry Group (?) in New York on 25/11/1856,  but deserted on 23/06/1857.

Most likely the 5th Infantry

I didn’t see his name here, but perhaps he wasn’t buried in a military cemetery (especially if he didn’t re-enlist).

He is mentioned on findagrave memorial Soldiers Home
Greenwood Cemetery
New Orleans Louisiana
Plot 55 Willow Hawthorne Cedar

Good Morning Everyone,

I am overwhelmed by the marvellous response to my enquiry.......Lisa in California especially has been more than helpful, not to mention RJ137 for the newspaper extracts.

Robert POWER's story now appears firmly told and I am looking forward to transcribing all the information into narrative format.   My thanks to everyone who added their posts.

For the moment,

BAC3

If I might humbly suggest, if you haven’t already done so, double-checking the possibility that there weren’t two men with similar backgrounds.  It certainly appears that Robert Powers was your Robert Power but….   Was it common to add an s to the Power surname?  Were any Powers births recorded near London, circa 1834?  I’ve come across records where individuals state they were “from” large cities rather than using their actual small home towns.  Could Robert Powers have given an incorrect date of birth and might there be another man born c1830?, etc.   I believe the records found were for your man, but…

When I was about 11 years old, we met whom my family believed to be a very distant cousin.  There were many similarities between our early 1800s John Ovens and Honora’s 1800s “black sheep of the family” John Ovens, including seeing a photograph of her nephew(?) who, I believe, could have passed as my mum’s cousin.  (I never saw the photograph but it was mentioned numerous times.)

Decades later, I found out that our John and her John were not the same man.  I still have not found our link but I believe there is one.

I wouldn’t want you to make the same mistake.

PS.  I wonder if the cemetery office might have Mr. Powers’ burial information?  At least for my Canadian ancestors, we’ve uncovered very helpful details.
