adopted person in Census?
« on: Thursday 04 January 24 21:20 GMT (UK) »
Hello all! I am new here. I live in the Netherlands and am researching a friend's family tree. Hopefully you understand my 'Google translate' English.

An ancestor was probably adopted. She was an illegitimate child. Only mother was mentioned at birth. It also says: paternity of the child found by order of court. And when she is 20, she lives with her mother again. In the time between birth and 20 years of age I can not find her. I had hoped to find her in a census but unfortunately nothing... Can anyone give me tips on where I could find her. She was born in Edinburgh.

Thanks!
Astrid Koorn

Hi Astrid

Welcome to RootsChat from me too  :)

If it is ok to provide us with her name, can you also any further details from her birth registration?

Have you been successful in tracing her mother and her family? If so, what details do you have for her?

What happened with her mother in that 20 year gap?

Thank you for your response!

Her name is Jessie Elizabeth Milne.
Born: 17th of June 1918 in The Hospice, 219 High Street Edinburgh
Mother: Lily Ogilvie Milne (munition worker) 27 Salisbury Street in Edinburgh.

Mothers name is sometimes Lily, Lillian, Lilian
She married Simon (Sam) Bialeck. Jessie is not living with them at that time.
I also can't find the mother in that gap.

Astrid

Just additional details here for background.

Lilian married Simon Bialeck in Edinburgh in 1920. From what you mention, daughter Jessie wasn't living with them in 1921 at the time of the census?

A little here on The Hospice, 219 High Street Edinburgh (Site of Elsie Inglis Hospital) http://curiousedinburgh.org/tag/the-hospice/

Possible name of Jessie's father?

Repository    National Records of Scotland
Reference    SC39/19/1918/13
Title    Lily Milne v Hyman Black
Dates    1918
Access status    Open
Location    Off site
Description    Affiliation and aliment
Level    Item
Departmental cipher    A225/1918

The access to documents is in person. However, you could request a copy of the documents. They can give you a quote for how much it will cost before your order (good to do as they charge per page and with large files it can be impractical to order).

Yes that is correct. There were no children mentioned.

Thank you Monica! I had already found this one. I actually thought it was a shelter for women. And hoped to find her there. But it was a maternity hospital.

Only 2 births in Scotland for someone with the name of Hyman Black. One if 1912 and this one:

HYMAN MARKS BLACK
Mother's maiden name NYMAN
1899
685 / 4 / 584
St Giles Edinburg

When was Lily Milne born?

Likely death for this Hyman in 1972 in Haymarket, Edinburgh at the age of 73.

Oh wow! You are good! I've seen this side before. But apparently the correct actions were not taken. I'll see what they ask for it. It's just a service to friends so it shouldn't be too expensive ;)
