Only 2 births in Scotland for someone with the name of Hyman Black. One if 1912 and this one:

HYMAN MARKS BLACK
Mother's maiden name NYMAN
1899
685 / 4 / 584
St Giles Edinburg

When was Lily Milne born?

24th of July 1898

Likely death for this Hyman in 1972 in Haymarket, Edinburgh at the age of 73.

Is this Lily's birth reg.?:

LILLIE OGILVIE MILNE

Have you tried checking Lily's family members to see whether Jessie could be with them in 1921?

Is this her family in 1901?:

Yes that is correct! You're also fast!
I did not check other family members. I tried to see if she lived with Lilian's parents. But I couldn't find anything.

Another possibility on searches, which just adds to possibilities, is that she may show under her father's surname of Black. Not uncommon for illegitimate children to go by either surname (mother or reputed father's)

Does your friend know anything about Jessie in later years?

Looking at the 1921 census, there are a number of possibilites for her under both surnames. None in Edinburgh though. It would be pot luck having to view each one.

My mother was born on 2nd October 1918 at The Hospice, 219 High Street, Edinburgh. She spent the first year of her life at 27 Drummond Place, Edinburgh which was a mother and baby home at that time. In 1919 she was fostered by a couple but never officially adopted (Legal adoption only came about in Scotland in 1929/1930)
In the 1921 Census the couple who fostered her said she was their daughter so she appears under their surname.

This may not help your friend but it interested me and I attach a photograph of The Hospice taken around the time of the births.

That is a great photo, Dorrie  :)

A further change of surname, if she was fostered before her mother's marriage, could well explain why nothing shows for her in 1921 in the Edinburgh area.

Her marriage in 1948 and death in 1994 were both registered under the surname of her step father, Bialeck.

Unfortunately my friend does not know very much about Jessie.

Thank you very much Monica! You are a great help. I have some tools that I can use further. And I have send a request to the National Records of Scotland. I will keep you posted!

Yes that is correct. At first I was confused searching for her. I was thinking that Simon Bialeck maybe was her father. Maybe he was fighting in te war. But it is getting clearer now.

Hello Dorrie! I have the picture. But thank you! It is indeed a very nice picture.

So, Jessie was probably not adopted... That is good to know.
Do you know if there are records of the mother and baby home?
I am living in The Netherlands so I have to search online. (or take a nice vacation to Scotland  ;))
