Robert William MURCH 1848-?
« on: Friday 05 January 24 21:15 GMT (UK) »
Robert William MURCH was born 29 April 1848 in Wellington, son of Philip Matthews MURCH and his wife Catherine.

Can't find anything else about him after that date, seems to have disappeared. No marriage or death.

Possibly died as a baby and death not registered??

Thanks

No mention of son (- although only skimmed the pages) that I could see in Will of Catherine MURCH  d.1876.   (Daughters Kate MURCH and Ellen BUCHOLZ  are named.)

Hi Eyesee, first time this has happened to me on rootschat. I cannot help you with your exact query re Robert. His father Philip Matthews appears on my tree as the brother of William Palmer Murch (1819-1855) who married Anne Smart in 1841. Both brothers must have travelled to NZ pre 1850 as William & Anne's 1st child was named after his uncle Philip was born 1850. After Philip snr died his wife returned to the UK and married George Hood.

Thank you SS.

Philip and his wife Catherine came to NZ in 1841 on the 'Gertrude'. Not sure when William Palmer Murch arrived. Philip and Catherine had another son born 5 days before they left England, and who died in NZ in Jan 1842. Have not found his name yet.

Philip died less than a year after his brother in 1856.

Hi Ian,

Drawing a very long bow here, but worth checking, I feel.

In 1881 a Robert MARCH, saddler of Whangarei, was declared bankrupt. He was aged 35, therefore born c'1847.

Palmer MURCH, his wife Anne and daughter Mary Ann arrived in New Plymouth in 1842 on the Blenheim. The passenger list says the daughter was 3 months old, so the Marianne registered Jun qtr 1842 Axminster Union. The Blenheim left for NZ on 1 July 1842, and called into Wellington on the way to New Plymouth. It did have other Somerset families on board as one of mine was on there and got off in Wellington instead of carrying on to New Plymouth.

Harry 1849, Philip 1850 and Mary Elizabeth 1856 all born in New Plymouth, NZ.

Bolton St Cemetery in Wellington, NZ has three MURCH burials in 1842, no names unfortunately.

Brother of Philip
Son of Philip
Niece of Philip

A Mr Murch died in Wellington on 22 Jan 1842, according to death notice in paper.

A Robert MURCH aged 31 was on the Gertrude with his wife Ruth and two children, a son aged 1 (William) and a daughter aged 5 (Hellen Margaret). Is he Philip and William Palmer's brother Robert born 1809 in Colyton, Devon.

A Robert MURCH married a Ruth TRASK at Norton sub Hambdon in Somerset in 1834. Had a few kids there. In 1841 he is not born in county. This Robert is shown on a few trees on Ancestry as being Philip's brother. No sign of them after 1842 in NZ so if it is Robert who died that year then Ruth may have returned to England.

PS Robert and Philip on the Gertrude were both selected by the same person.

A Mrs Murch and three children left New Plymouth on 27 Jun 1856 for Manukau (Auckland).

They left Auckland on the Prince of Wales on 14 July 1856 for London.

I believe the brother of Philip who died in 1842 is Robert. The niece is Hellen Margaret, Robert and Ruth's daughter.

The son William dies in Norton sub Hambdon, Somerset in Jan 1844.

Ruth appears in Norton sub Hambdon in 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881 with various Trask relatives.

She died in Coventry in Jan 1901.
