Mapping software - any suggestions?
« on: Saturday 06 January 24 10:05 GMT (UK) »
Hi and HNY ;D

I’d like to plot all the places I’ve FH connections with here in the U.K. and being old school planned to use paper maps but no doubt there’s software that would do the job - any suggestions/recommendations please?

Thank you.

It would depend upon how widely geographically spread your ancestors were - and all their movements.  Some of mine moved quite often (mining).

That’s true.  My tree fans out from London up to Norfolk and all across southern England down to Cornwall and almost every county between. By comparison my husband’s tree, with about the same number of people and maybe a couple of generations extra, occupied just two neighbouring counties!

I’d like to map it all out just for curiosity’s sake.  For example, I hadn’t appreciated how connected to Hampshire I am (hardly know it in reality) but when I totted it all up I’ve got 21 families connected to 26 places in the county so I need to learn more about the county and the places for context.  ;D

The cheapskate option would be to drop pins into Google Earth.

I've generated a distribution of kin from one of my trees using Family Historian.  It's taken a while as it's a large tree.  Not sure that it;s finished processing but this gives an idea on their a world map.

Many of them emigrated from UK, as you can see.

Add - it's still working. I now have a pin in New Zealand. I'll put up another map when it's finished  :D
