Jane Cundy c1815 St Ewe parents
« on: Saturday 06 January 24 21:20 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I have Jane who on the 1851 census, is living in Trethurgy, St Austell and gives here dob as 1815 in St Ewe. She is married to James Welsh. There's a marriage between these two names in St Austell in 1846. Her name seems to be recorded as Cundy and Candy.

He was married before to Sally Symons and they have children Nancy 1838 and Isaac 1841 both in Perranzubuloe. Also William 1840-1840. James was born in St Teath. I have his ancestors etc.

James and Jane's children are: Elizabeth b1846 ish, James 1850 and Joseph 1856.  Checked their MMN on gro and it gives Cundy.

The only Jane Cundy I can find on 1841 is with William 1802 and the following, listed in this order on the census: brackets show births on Cornwall OPC database)

Peter 1823 (St Ewe, Wm & Eliz)
Martha 1827 (1829 St Ewe, Wm & Eliz)
Diana 1829 (couldn't find her, apart from 1833 St Austell with James and Elizabeth as parents or Dinah Condy 1833 St Mewan, parents William and Elizabeth)
Paul 1833 (1834 Paramour, which is near St Ewe, William and Elizabeth)
Elizabeth 1837
Jane 1815 (closest baptism 1817 mevagissey but parents Philip and Elizabeth, 1810, born 1809, st Stephen in Brannel, John and Philippa, 1811 same place Samuel and Ann)
William 1840 can't find baptism

They are living in St Wenn in 1841. Obviously no relationships given.

Can anyone say who Jane's parents are?

I think you have the right Jane

1851 census for James and Jane Welsh includes William Candy/Cundy aged 11 born St Austell. He's listed as son in law, which usually means step-son in this context. Looks like the same 1 yr old William as on the 1841 you found

Oh wow. I hadn't noticed that. Well done 👍 so William must have been illegitimate then.
Thank you.

I had assumed that this was Jane.

However, I now need to know whether she was living with her brother William, b1801 in 1841? Or her dad? As I've no baptism for her to find her parents.

Any ideas?

Sister seems more likely

This marriage looks interesting and fits the births of the other children on 1841, who arrive from 1823 onwards

William Candy
Elizabeth Sweet

Marriage    14 Dec 1822,    St. Ewe, Cornwall, England

Sorry ... Yes I'd found that.
It would seem that William born 1801 was born 1802 to Solomon Cundy and Rebecca yelland?? If that's the case, then I have several generations back from there.

However, I still don't have proof that Jane was Solomon's daughter?!

Jane’s marriage certificate should give the name and occupation of her father.

Ah yes ... Was so engrossed in checking other sources, I'd forgotten that the marriage was after 1837 🤦🏻‍♀️
Thanks 😊
