Death of William C. Johnston, New York City, after Nov 1950
« on: Sunday 07 January 24 01:46 GMT (UK) »
When Edward Cockburn Johnstone died in Spartanburg, South Carolina in Nov 1950, his obit states his brother William C. Johnston/e was still alive in New York City. William was born May 10, 1875 in Paisley, Scotland to Thomas Johnston and Jane Cockburn. Can anyone find the date of death of William? I don't know if he was married, widowed, single, whatever.
Thanks for any help

With the usual health warning about accuracy, here is the son in Wiki:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Johnstone_(actor)

There are various other references online, eg:
http://www.radiospirits.info/2018/02/07/happy-birthday-william-johnstone-2/

Added: Then there is the following article in The Knickerbocker News (Albany NY) of 14 May 1951, I don't know if this is about someone else (just a co-incidence of names) or if the information has been mixed up, see what you think:

Former Actor Dies When Home Burns

Newtown, Conn. - (AP) A man who once played the radio role of "The Shadow" burned to death when fire swept through his home here yesterday.  He was William C. Johnstone, 76, who performed under the name of "LaMont Cranston".  He also was an artist and worked with several New York agencies.  Three others were injured in the fire that caused an estimated $25,000 damages.  Johnstone's wife, Theresa, 63, was overcome but revived quickly and was taken to a neighbour's home. Jules Towoda, 55, and his wife Susan, 52, were reported in good condition at a hospital.

The Connecticut death index shows a William C. Johnstone having died at his residence in Newtown, Fairfield, Connecticut on 13 May 1951, it gives his marital status as never married, which is inconsistent with the Knickerbocker News article, and indeed a similar article in the Kingston Daily Freeman of 14 May 1951, which adds:

... Johnstone leaves his widow and a son, William C., Jr., of New York City, a radio actor.

Again from the 'fultonhistory' website, another article on this incident, this time from the Long Island Star Journal of 14 May 1951:

Artist Dies As Flames Destroy Home

A radio actor and artist was burned to death and an Elmhurst couple was seriously injured in a $25,000 blaze which swept through a 12 room home early yesterday in Newtown, Conn.  William C. Johnstone, 75, an artist who once played the role of Lamont Cranston in the radio thriller, "The Shadow," died in the flames which destroyed his summer home on Currituck road in Newtown.  Jules Towoda, 53, and his wife Susan, 52, of 86-11 Elmhurst Avenue, Elmhurst, were taken to Danbury Hospital for treatment of second degree burns.  Mrs. Johnstone, who was partly overcome by smoke, was treated at the scene. At 6 A. M. yesterday, a neighbour, Andrew Sedor, saw flames coming from the house and dashed to warn the occupants.  He assisted Mrs. Johnstone and her two guests from the house, but Johnstone was fatally overcome before he could be reached.

Added: I can see newspaper references that support the internet references to the son William having played The Shadow / Lamont Cranston, but not the father.  Is it simply a mix-up?  The father in the 1940 census described himself as an artist, so at least that fits with the newspaper articles.

Thank you so much Sandra and gaffy. Sandra, the draft registration confirms that you have got the right William Johnston. There is much confusion throughout the years, but essentially it seems that the father was in advertising and printing whereas the son was the actor.
The most confusion comes with the death of the father which seems to be in Newport Connecticut in 1951 at his summer home.  Thank you gaffy for all those articles you found about his death. No wonder I couldn’t find his death in New York.
In 1910, the census says this is the father’s second marriage. Sometimes both the father and the son have the middle initial S which would be incorrect.
Many articles mention that the son  was a radio artist and was connected with Orson Wells and the Shadow. I would be dating myself, but I remember when I was a child,  the whole family would listen to the radio about nine or 10 at night to Orson Wells, and the Black Museum.
The 1910 census has Caroline Dittrich. Wasn’t she also an actress?
Thanks again Sandra and gaffy. You both solved the life and death of William C Johnstone and I am very appreciative.
Added: thank you Sandra for the additional info about the funeral. Gaffy did have great finds about William Johnstone.
