Lambeth Old School West Norwood SE 1891 Census
« on: Sunday 07 January 24 08:31 GMT (UK) »
I have found 6 children with the Johnson surname on the 1891 census for this Elder Road School which I believe was part of the workhouse.

How would I find this census to find the adults in the workhouse then?

Would there be any other records as I would like to know if this is the Ada Johnson I am looking for. She is aged 5 years but birthplace says not known. The one I am looking for was born Plumstead/Woolwich.

Many thanks

Lambeth Workhouse was either on Princes Road (later named Black Prince Road) or Renfrew Road, Kennington.

The Norwood school was run by Lambeth union, and was a seperate building from the workhouse.
There were not necessarily adult members of the family in the workhouse at this time.

Records such as admission, discharge, creed records, etc, would have been kept by Lambeth Board of Guardians. They used to be available on familysearch but something's going funny with their digital microfilm lately. Might also be on Ancestry.

(Note: there are two Norwood schools. The one on Elder Road is associated with Lambeth workhouse. The Westwow Hill one was a private establishment that took children from all over London).

The 1891 returns for the Princes Road workhouse, Lambeth, start at RG12/397 folio 137 page 1

The 1891 returns for the Renfrew Road workhouse, Lambeth, start at RG12/397 folio 115 page 1

The admission/discharge registers for both are on Ancestry, but they are incomplete, and some are labelled incorrectly.
