Martha Poffley - born about 1821 Lambourn or Eastbury

Hi all,

I'm looking for a Martha Poffley born about 1821 in either Eastbury or Lambourn areas as recorded in the censues. I have her marriage to a Benjamin Excell in  1847 in Ruscombe listing her father as William Poffley, carpenter.

If anyone can help most appreciated.

Based on census.
The William Poffley who married Elizabeth Higgins 14 October 1816 at Wickham is a Wheelwright

The William Poffley who married Charlotte Hatt 4 February 1816 at Hungerford is a Labourer.

So William and Elizabeth come closest to occupation Carpenter.  I cannot find a baptism for any females

As you say, I believe that William Poffley- m -Elizabeth Higgins may be the parents but  haven't been able to find Martha's birth/baptism.  I have found a John bapt. 1817 & Henry bapt. 1825 but nothing much in between. I wonder if they moved to another county for a while.

Ellen Poffley bap. 4 August 1844 at Lambourn  mother Martha Poffley

She later goes by Ellen Poffley Excell and marries John Thomas Clements 1874.

Three well dressed men, William Poffley, Henry Poffley and John Poffley, were charged with allowing their mother to be chargeable to the Hungerford Union.
Paraphrased. All of them are carpenters.

Is this referring to Elizabeth Poffley?

Well thats the Martha - she marries Benjamin Excell in 1847 Ruscombe at an age of 26.

Benjamin Excell was born 1823 in Barkham and his birth registered in the Protestant Dissenters Register (s/o Job & Frances). So there is an element of non-conformity.

As as Elizabeth Poffley goes - she was in the Hungerford W/House in 1871 (aged 67) as a widow.
