Joseph BRASSINGTON married 18 Dec 1820 to Ellen CHINLEY in Southwell, Notts

Just wondering if this is a transcription or from the record, Neale.
The other records you posted are the same/similar to mine with the variations in spellings.
The name seems to be ‘Chinery’ or similar.

You have to remember that spelling is an art-form; not a science!

The person writing out certificates and/or parish register entries simply wrote down what they heard.
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

If it is her, she was baptised as Chinery. The father was married as Chinnery.
Her children were registered with various forms of that name.

As KGarrad writes it all depends on what is heard with pronunciation etc and not knowing how your name should be spelled.

Ye I've noticed a lot of my my ancestors marked their name with a cross from that period. I image because they were illiterate?

I've got Halket who's father was Hacket who's Father was Hacket who's father was Halket again . Same with the Romani Florence/Florens and Cooke/Cook side
