Banardos and Germany
« on: Monday 08 January 24 18:57 GMT (UK) »
Good evening My 1st cousin twice removed was sent to Canada by Banardos in 1901 after the father deserted the family. We have her records from Banardos and know she was sent to a farm and was in the  Banardos 'Ups and Downs' Magazine
'Martha Gill is trying hard to be a
real German like her kind employer,
and in her note tells us how well she
tan milk and churn and what good
times Easter will bring''
There is a note that she spent time in Germany The dates are unclear as she was in a boarding out home in Hampstead Norris Berks in the 1901 census before travelling to Quebec in the July. I have read that Banardos has German family links But I am unable to find information on children being sent there Has anyone else heard of this Many thanks

The founder, Thomas John Barnardo was born in Dublin, 1845.
No German link that I can find?

Thomas John Barnardo (1845–1905) was born in Dublin on 4 July 1845. His father's family was of Spanish/Jewish origin, but his father himself was German by birth, and became a naturalised British subject only in 1860. This was on the 'Victorian Web' But I'm open to it being incorrect

Thomas John was the 13th child of father John Michaelis Barnardo, from Havelburg, Germany.

The first Barnardo, John Michaelis, arrived in Ireland in 1810 in a fishing boat off the Clare coast. As far as we could know, the family is originally from Venice but moved to Germany. During his stay in Clare he met and fell in love with Elizabeth O'Brien. He returned to Germany but came back here in 1812 and married Elizabeth, went to Dublin and opened a fur shop at 4 Dame Street. It is said that he was a taxidermist by trade.

Barnardo's was just one of many  err "charities",  that  sent hundreds and thousand of children into  child labor from England  to Australia and Canada and others, in Australia this was still happening in the 1960's.

RootsChat has a section and database on "British Hone Children"

British Home Children

Over a period of 70 years from 1869 to 1939, up to 120,000 British children were sent to Canada, Australia and New Zealand to work as indentured farm workers and domestics.

The descendants of what are now known as 'The British Home Children' number up to ten percent of the current Canadian population.

Many children were sent to Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United States of America by various institutions and Childrens' Homes in the UK.

In this database you can search by Surname, County, Ships' names, etc. for
"British Home Children"
and you can also find out which other RootsChatters are researching them.

There is a Martha Gill listed in the quick search section -perhaps you put the entry in that database ?
