All,
This one person i am stuck with,
John Carl Barnholden born Oct 1889 possibly Horsholm, Denmark, died Moose Jaw Nov 1978. Apparently he ran away from home and took his mothers name of Barnholdt which changed to Barnholden over time. Apparently his real name was Johannes Carl Witt (or de Witt). Any help would be gratefully recieved, many thanks again

Kind Regards
Mike

Hi Sandra,
Thank you for the new information, all new to me, thank you. Regarding John Carl Barnholden as we know him, appently he stowed away on his Uncle's ship and landed in San Francisco in the early 1900's. He moved up to Canada as conscription started for WWI but joined the Canadian army. I think he would have landed using his original surname Witt.

Regards
Mike

He's going to be very young travelling on his own, early 1900's. There was the San Francisco earthquake in 1906 which destroyed all birth and immigration records.

When did he change his name ?

Do you know the ship name ?

Sandra,
According to my Cousin he stowed away on his Uncles ship when he was 15 yrs old and was in San Francisco when the earthquake happened in 1906. I have found his Canadian army attestation papers and it looks like he had already changed his name to what we know him as.

His WWI service record is available here:

https://recherche-collection-search.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/Home/Search?DataSource=Genealogy|Military|PfFww&LastName=barnholden&

Gives his father Carl in Denmark as next of kin and then lists his brother Edumond, also of Denmark.  Says his father is alive, but his mother (unnamed) is deceased.   In his will, he leaves everything to his father Carl L. Barnholden in Denmark.  In 1918, he indicates both his parents are deceased and he names his brother Edmond as his next of kin.
