Henry Hoopman Laray (Waterman), Germany, need help

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping someone here can help me with Henry Hoopman Laray, he was born in approx 1855 in Hamburg, Germany. I can find him in England from 1882 when he married until his death in 1893. Prior to this i can't find any record of him. I do recall seeing somewhere his fathers name was Andrew.

If anyone could find a birth record for him or a passenger list of when he arrived in England it would be greatly appreciated, thanks

He married Elizabeth Mills in Liverpool 1882 at Christ Church Waterloo.  Have you bought a copy of his marriage cert to confirm his fathers name

Where did he die?  Nothing on freebmd for 1893. His son Robert died 1889 aged 4

I haven't got his marriage certificate yet, its on my list to get.

His death was recorded by the fire brigade in Liverpool as being a fireman onboard s. s. St Ronan. The ship was on fire and he was overcome by smoke, he fell into a flooded cargo hold and died before his colleagues could get to him.

My main problem is not knowing what his name was in Germany, Henry Laray is anglicised

the date of death was 30th September 1893 at Langton Dock, Bootle. He was 38 years and 11 months old, so his date of birth would be October 1854

I assumed Waterman was his occupation?  Where does that surname fit in with Laray

Burial record shows him as 39

by all accounts he just changed his name from Laray to Waterman, as did his wife and children. Maybe Laray was still too foreign sounding for him, who knows !

I've got all the relevant information on him in England. What i am struggling with is his birth in Hamburg, Germany and how and when he got to England.

If so you have missed a child Robert Hoopman Laray birth registered 1885 buried 29 August 1889 age 4

All the children were registered as Laray, it's the census where their name is Waterman

I'll look into the birth of Robert. Not sure what the heritage centre could tell me that i don't already know. My questions relate to his arrival in the UK and birth, both of which i assume will be under his German name, for example, Heinrich (henry) Lierow/Laar/Lary (Laray)
