There is a death at NZ BDM for one Douglas Johnson in 2005. Date of birth recorded as 24.8.1940.

Given the dates you've supplied for the parents, I suspect they are Arthur Reginald JOHNSON and his first wife, Margaret Campbell JOHNSON (nee SPENCE).   There is a 1932 NZ marriage index listing for them.

Unsure if you had accessed the Whanganui (Wanganui) Cemetery website previously when quoting their dates of death

You will note from Cemetery search record, that Arthur Reginald JOHNSON had actually died at Christchurch (South Island) on 18 October 1990.  The Wanganui listing records an ashes burial.
