Census over time - numbers in a particular parish
« on: Wednesday 10 January 24 12:48 GMT (UK) »
Hi all
I’ve been asked a question and haven’t located the answer on the National Archives website or my own knowledge so wondered if anyone here had advice.
They wanted to know if it was possible to tell just from the ten year censuses roughly what the population was in a particular parish when each census was taken. So eg in Parish A in 1841, 51, 61 etc etc. We know that parish boundaries might have changed, so they were curious as to the growth in the area in very rough terms not precisely. I know some histories may have been written about individual areas, but this question related to the actual census returns. Any ideas? Many thanks.

These were published in volumes of tables during the years following each census.  Libraries will have sets of them.  A large amount of the content has been compiled into the website "A vision of Britain through time".

Select a place, select Units and statistics,
click the tab Units covering this place, then select population.

I’ve found some answers for the earlier censuses up to the 1891 on the Genuki site . The figures were contained in a Directory dated 1894 for the area I was looking for.
