1696 Yorkshire Will naming Tobias Taylor
« on: Wednesday 10 January 24 15:43 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I am trying to read a 1696 will of Thomas Knaggs naming Tobias Taylor, a butcher to something for Tobias Taylor to use on Tom Knaggs'  farm at Wapley. Later in this will Thomas Knaggs names Tobias Taylor of Danby Forest as well as 2 others as administrators of his will. I am looking to see what this one word is that is written in this will.  Looks like it begins with the letter f.
Thanks for your help.
Margaret

It looks like all the right of my farme, but a bit more of the original might help in comparing the letter formations. It doesn't need to be enlarged as much as this - in fact if it's too big it pixellates and is harder to make out.

Thanks - I was actually thinking of a clip of 3-4 whole lines. I still can't think of it being anything other than farme, but just to be a bit more certain, I'd like to see if there are any other places where his 'a' isn't joined up at the top.

Thanks - that's perfect. :)

As I went through it I was thinking I might need to look in an old dialect dictionary to see if farm might ever have been spelled furme. Certainly there would be a variety of pronunciations, and as spelling tended to be more phonetic than standardised.....

But then I got to the end, and in the last few word you can see seall and Febeary, both of which have an 'a' like the one in question. So I'm quite satisfied that it will be farme.

Thanks for your re-looking at this word.   I now see where you get the idea of 'farme'

Again, thanks for your time and answer.
