Daniel Nichol
« on: Wednesday 10 January 24 16:47 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to help a close friend with the above. Before spending any money which I know will probably have to do I wonder if you all could help first.

Known facts.

Daniel Nichol married Mary Glanvill/Glanville JQ 1884 Whitehaven. 2 sons born, Daniel 1884 & Samuel 1885.
Daniel dies aged 47 in 1891 and his wife appears with sons in 1891 census. Mary went on to marry Edwin Dalton in 1900.

Who were Daniels parents. (I know marriage cert would confirm father and occupation)

Believe these are prior census returns for Daniel but not totally convinced.

1881 ?
1871   5250 36 11
1861   3944 76 15
1851   2432 310 9

Thanks

SS

I think the marriage certificate is the only answer getting his occupation and father's name to help finding him on census records  :)

You do need confirmation from a source, but just wondering about this entry in GRO births:

GRO Reference: 1842  J Quarter in WHITEHAVEN  Volume 25  Page 156  Occasional Copy: B
   NICHOL, DANIEL        LONG

There is a family headed by a Samuel Nicholl and Hannah Long who show here in 1851 www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SGKY-NQ9

As you can see, there is no sign of a Daniel in the household though. The younger children, Hannah, Isaac and Mary all show on their births with mother as 'Long'.

I can't see any deaths either for a Daniel born 1842 to be able to discount that birth entry either.

You certainly need that marriage cert to progress further  ;)

There is also a birth - 1840 Whitehaven
Daniel Birkett Nichol - mmn Long

I can’t see a death. It is puzzling and agree that the marriage record is needed.

Do you have a birth certificate of either son of Daniel & Mary?
Might help find Daniel on 1881 census if his occupation is known  :-\

Are you assuming that Daniel Nichol Snr was born somewhere in Cumberland due to the registration place of his marriage & death?
