Many thanks all for responses. There are some interesting leads which need following up. I have put my hand in my pocket and ordered a pdf of the marriage cert and will let you know the outcome.

38 Ennerdale Road as per 1881 census was the home of the Glanville family.

Agree re the marriage cert but wondered if anyone can see the Samuel and Hannah Nichol family in 1841 :-\

Kay

Added - I think I may have found the family in 1841 living at St Bees

Samuel   O'Nickell   30   Labourer Cumberland, England
Hannah   O'Nickell   30   Cumberland, England
Elizabeth   O'Nickell   9   Cumberland
James   O'Nickell   7   Cumberland
Sarah   O'Nickell   3 Cumberland

Having just downloaded the 2 births registrations, Daniel Nichol 1842 & Daniel Birkett Nichol 1840 reveals that Samuel & Hannah were parents of both these children and both born at the 1841 census address (Swing Pump Lane). Still awaiting the 1884 marriage cert.

In April 1870 Mr Daniel Nicholl of Distington is advertising 'that true-bred CART STALLION, "RIFLEMAN" ' to serve mares.

In the 1871 census Daniel Nichol, 26 servant, Castle Mile, Distington, household of a miller

In February 1872 there are newspaper reports over the disputed ownership of a horse "Rifleman", involving a Daniel Nichol of Aldby, Cleator Moor. There is still an Aldby Farm just off Ennerdale Road (address on birth certificate).

Many thanks for latest info. Until I receive marriage certificate parentage remains open. If I was a betting man I believe his father is Samuel born c1804 who married Hannah Long in 1831 in Millom. Why Daniel is not with parents in 1851/61 census remains a mystery. Also I suspect Daniel may have previously married in 1864 but that's another certificate needed to confirm.

There is also a birth - 1840 Whitehaven
Daniel Birkett Nichol - mmn Long

I can’t see a death. It is puzzling and agree that the marriage record is needed.
