St Michael’s Sanatorium, Axbridge, Somerset
« on: Thursday 11 January 24 01:41 GMT (UK) »
Hello.
Does anyone have access to the records for St Michael’s Sanatorium, Axbridge, please?
I am trying to discover information regarding
Selina Ellen Bastin, who died here at the age of 16, in August 1886.
She is buried in the cemetery there. I understand it was a sanatorium and convalescent home for people affected with TB.
Information I am looking for is relatives, if mentioned.
I know her mother was Mary Ann Bastin nee Simpson.
She had been summoned to Westminster Police Court the year before on charges of threatening her own sister, the child’s namesake, Selina Buck and another woman, Marian Evans. It appears that she believed Mrs Evans husband had absconded with her daughter.
I am interested to try and find out more about this story if I can.

There is an Axminster Heritage Organization that could possibly answer question concerning the Sanitorium.

Or The South West Heritage Trust.

Amondg…I will send it to you in a message x
PS…excellent work spotting that James and Richard are Simpsons…Richard is my great great grandfather.
Also, I can’t find a marriage for Henry and Martha, so I am assuming he dumped for Mary Ann and the girls.
This happened on the either branch of this family..my gt gt grandfather left his “wife” and four children for my gt gt grandmother. The wife was in the workhouse and gave birth to a fifth child and my gt gt grandmother gave birth to my gt grandfather a month later.
These Victorians seem to be a right bunch! 🙄😂

I am such a twit…it’s Axbridge, Somerset, not Axminster, which is in Devon…let’s just say it’s a senior moment…does 58 class as senior 😬😂

Apologies your 5th sentence said you were looking for relatives.

Henry B couldn't marry Martha he was still married to Mary Ann, he wouldn't want to risk imprisonment on bigamy charges.

How far is Red Cross Street from Hugh Street or Upper Bloomburg Street?.

The daughter is not necessarily Selina.
Lydia married William Henry Grenville Hutchens 25 December 1885 and she always lived with her grandparents, so she can be eliminated.

Whereas Alice Elizabeth was about 19/20 years old. She left the area entirely!!
Neighbours do talk.
Married William Cocks 1889 in  West Derby Lancashire (1901 census has Cox)
Married 2nd Thomas Rustage 25 July 1904 a widower reg. Liverpool Lancashire.

Selina would have been about 15 but already very ill from TB she died the following year 1886.

Newspaper articles are from April 1885.
