Early 1900s, Melbourne Aust Interpretation
« on: Friday 12 January 24 03:46 GMT (UK) »
This photo seems to be early 1900s, maybe 1910-1930?, Melbourne, Australia.
The name I was given was "Miss Yates".  I can't quite work out the meaning of the handwritten text at the bottom.  Can anyone clarify what they think it means? I would also like to better date the photo.
No further information about the photographer, unfortunately.
Thanks for your time folks.
Dave

Can't help with dating, though I would have thought it was earlier than Edwardian, maybe 1880s but I'm no expert!

I think the writing says:
Yates Miss 2112 - July 21st

though what the "2112" signifies I'm not sure.

Hi Dave.

Do you have the actual photo or is this a scan/copy?
If you have it, Please could you show us the back of the photo?

I also am not expert at dating, but i would think 1880's.
She looks in her late teens

Also, could be GATES?

Thanks Sue.
Sorry, I only have the scan. The original was apparently pasted into an album and there's no further information. I don't have access to the "original".  It is almost certainly 100% YATES as that was the name of the family.

Thanks Maddy too.
I was pretty sure it says Yates Miss 2112 - July 21st too. I wondered if 2112 was a batch/order number or similar. I WISH there was something to identify the studio. It is remotely possible the photo originated in Leicester, UK.

There ARE a couple of related photos that date in the 1880s, but I can't for the life of me find a female who would have been 15-20 years at that time. Just one of the unknowns then!

I do appreciate your responses.

You've most likely already seen it, but the photo is stamped with "Proof."

I guess this means this was likely the first photo sent to the client in order for them to judge whether or not to print further copies.

I would say this was an 1880s image.

The great AI in the metaverse suggests circa 1882.

Thanks so much, folks.
Sunnylew, I can't believe I had missed the "Proof" marking!  Thanks for pointing it out.

Teetotal and Gadget, I also appreciate the artificial and real Intelligence.  That is helpful indeed.  I have spent some time trying to identify the "set" for the photo as that might help with a city (?Melbourne or Leicester?).  Still working on it.

Folks, thanks again.

Here is a ploy for the desperate ;D ;D

She is most likely too young to have much jewellery of her own, but she is wearing a pendant  piece to finish her outfit nicely.

Scroll it up to large and do your best clip of it for reference.

Look at all other female photos in your set.  Does it reappear? To me it seems like a central stone surrounded by filigree or little pearls.

I relate this because before my g. grandfather came to Australia, he had each of his 3 or 4 daughters photographed. There were only one or two brooches and lockets which were shared for the individual sittings. ;)

It linked the sisters. ;)
