Catherine Walsh & John Delaney
« on: Friday 12 January 24 14:26 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,.
I was just trying to delve a little further into lives of two of my ancestors, John Delaney and his wife Catherine Walsh. Both lived in Oldham, Lancashire from 1860 when they were married. The census information gives some small details as follows:

Both are listed in the 1861 as having been born in Ireland in 1839. In the 1881 census both are said to have been born in Queen's County and finally, in 1891, after John's death, Catherine is recorded as Abbylayse, Ireland - I presume this means Abbeyleix.

I have sent for the marriage certificate but can anyone see anything for these people at all - I know its a needle in a haystack.

Thanks, Luke

Hi Luke,
There is a marriage in 1860 - St Mary’s Oldham

John Delaney, Lord Street
Catherine Morris , Hargreaves Street
Groom’s father - John Delany
Bride’s father - Mechal Morris
Witnesses Joseph Commings and Mary McManus

These addresses fit with the area for
John and Catherine Delany in 1861 3007 /95/16

Is this your family?

Lancs BMD show births with mothers name Morris but there is a John Thomas b 1869 with mother Walsh.

There are some baptisms on Lancsopc https://www.lan-opc.org.uk/

For Delaney/Morris including Edward, 1871 whose Godparents are Michael and Ellen Delaney. They presumably are related.

So, are we looking for Catherine Walsh or Catherine Morris?

Lancs BMD have a death 1863 for Catherine Delaney, 29 yrs but that age would not fit with 1861.
However cemetery records show Lord Street which does fit.

Added
Do you have the marriage details as you say you have sent for the certificate?
I can’t seem to find it.

Back again
1881 4075 /35/63

John and Catherine with several children, including Edward, 10 yrs and Theresa M, 6 yrs.
Their births show mothers name Morris.
That can’t be the death of Catherine Morris Delaney in 1863 then.

Hi Heywood, thank you for helping again. My direct link to John and Catherine is their son John Thomas Delaney, on his birth certificate his mothers maiden name is Walsh and he is listed as having been born at Lords Hill Street in Oldham. I had sent for the 1860 Wedding Certificate at St Mary's RC Chapel but didnt have all the details you had when I sent for it. I was aware (though I cannot remember how) that John Delaney lived at Lords Hill at the time of the wedding and that Catherine lived at Skellorn Street. Wedding certificates seem to take ages to arrive so I may be some time until it arrives.

It seems my information is a mixture of yours and something else, the info I had was this:

24July 1860 • Oldham Lancashire, United Kingdom
Married at St Mary's Catholic Chapel in Oldham. Johnn Delany married Catherine UNKNOWN In the presence of Joseph Conway and Mary McManus. He lived at Lords Hill, Oldham. She lived at Skellorn Street Oldham.

The witnesses are the same and John's address is too but this then isnt the right wedding certificate at all. I didnt reearch it enough before ordering it.
