Who lived at Homelands, Border Lane, North Brewham in 1973
« on: Saturday 13 January 24 15:17 GMT (UK) »
I have a letter dated 6 August 1973 from this address signed simply Madge.  According to the letter she married Charles in 1929 so will have passed away by now.

I have found the address in 1939 but they are not living there then.

They may have connections to Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire and/or Enfield.

If anyone can help to identify Madge and Charles I would be very grateful.

Is it a random letter or a letter from a relation?

Electoral registers could be the way to go.

According to the letter she married Charles in 1929

Free BMD marriages bring up 11 for Madge/Charles to whittle down.

Although she may have been known as Madge but be Margaret or similar.

Somewhere to start if in the right area.

Hi Millipede,

Thank you for your replies.

The letter was to my Grandfather but I think the writer was one of a group of friends.  Lots of first names mentioned but only one surname.  Doris (nee Emerton).

My Grandfather had obviously sent some photographs to Madge and she mentioned a number of people in them but by first name only or mother and father.  I think Madge may well be a pet name as she also mentions Tommy and Flossie, so frustrating  ;)

The only solid bit of information is the address, I have tried electoral registers on Ancestry and newspapers on FindMyPast but haven’t got very far.

Got it!

Madge was Ethel Marjorie Tompkins b. 1899 in Berkhamsted and died in 1982 at Homelands according to her probate record. Her husband was actually Arthur Cecil Dixon, not Charles!

Well that’s a few hours I won’t get back again but worth it in the end.

Thanks again for your suggestions.

Just found a tree on Ancestry where Arthur has “Charles” after his name- no wonder I couldn’t find him  ::)

Could have saved a lot of time if I had found this first: https://www.rectorylanecemetery.org.uk/biographies/edith-tompkins/  ;D
