Can I find more about this soldier?
« on: Saturday 13 January 24 19:46 GMT (UK) »
I came across this record after seeing the Cross of Sacrifice at Gilroes Cemetery in Leicester, and looking up burial records there. I find it rather intriguing. Can anyone throw any light on it? The soldier seems remarkably old, and his service with a Canadian unit seems odd, given that his parents were living in Leicester and he was buried there.

This is the link to his CWGC certificate:

Thanks for this info, Tazzie. I think that he was probably Arthur James Walters, son of Edwin and Mary Walters of Pingle St, Leicester. Edwin was a nailmaker from Bromsgrove, but later was an ironmonger in Sanvey Gate (close to Pingle St.). Edwin was still alive and in Sanvey Gate in 1921.

Arthur joined the Leicestershire Reigiment in 1888, married Emma Smith in 1890, and bought himself out of the regiment in 1891. Frederick was baptised in Leicester in January 1897, son of Arthur James and Emma Walters. Arthur was a (shoe) rivetter, of Ruby Street. In the 1901 Census Arthur and Frederick were living in Pool Road (next to Ruby Street) with Arthur’s mother-in-law, Rosetta Smith. He was by now a widower.

If son Frederick was in Montreal, I wonder whether he had gone out to Canada with Arthur, and that that was where Arthur joined the Canadian Army. Since he died in a military hospital in London, I wonder whether his burial in Leicester was to reunite him with his wife, who had died there some time around 1890? I’m assuming that Arthur could only have joined the Canadian Army if he”d actually been living over there at the time he joined?

ADDED

I think Emma died in 1899. Deceased Online website just says “Leicestershire” for her burial place, so I can’t confirm that it was Gilroes, though, since she died in Leicester, she was almost certainly buried there, just a short walk from where they were in 1897.

I have found a passenger listing for the boys Fred and Thomas aged 11 and 10 . Both depart Liverpool on the Tunisian
arriving on 6th August 1909, in Quebec going to Montreal to their father.
Can't pin an arrival for Arthur yet.
