Handwriting query
« on: Sunday 14 January 24 03:48 GMT (UK) »
Grateful if someone can help with the name of the "friend" written on the back of a photo.  I can read the following:

"Presented to Trevor Napier by his friend D (surname?)
Trieste 22 June 1945"

This inscription is on the back of a photo which appears to be of the Trieste mountain peaks.

After WW2 ended I do know that my father [Trevor Napier] who was in the 2 NZEF went skiing while waiting for a ship to return to NZ.  He arrived back in NZ on 13 January 1946.

Also, after the war he kept in touch for several years, with someone [name not known] in Italy, who was a Medical Doctor.  Same person????

Any help appreciated.

Very difficult. There seem to be 2 ways the writer forms letter r.

This is what I think I see so far, (in case it helps others)

Celestino, perhaps. Then does the last part start with Ce... - perhaps Ceri-?
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

Thanks to all for your interest and suggestions.
Reflecting on arthurk's response I wonder if the name is;

D Celestino Ceng (ie chartered engineer)?

Any further suggestions?

PS Just worked out that the photo is of the summit of Jof Fuart.

D Celestino Ceng (ie chartered engineer)?

Not if the person concerned was Italian, because (according to Google) the Italian for engineer is ingegnere (male) or ingegnera (female). Also, the English abbreviation is written with a capital 'E' - CEng.

I wonder if it could be D Celestino Cerri.
Perhaps what looks like the tail of a g or y is just a flourish at the end of the name? There is a mark above that might be a pronounced dot over a letter i.
