Keeping just Recording of sound from a video - - -
« on: Sunday 14 January 24 09:31 GMT (UK) »
. . .  a few days ago I took a short video of frogs - lots of frogs  in the early morning.  It is a large file which I have managed to trim . . but is there some way I can just leave the sound part of the video so it is small enough to load on RC?

Help please for a 'not very techie' person.    ;D   Please keep it really simple if there is a way to do it?

Thanks folks.

Wiggy

P.S.  It will be tomorrow before I can get back to answer.

If you do a google search “Convert video to audio”, a few easy options will come up.
Milligan - Jardine – Glencross – Dinwoodie - Brown: (Dumfriesshire & Kirkcudbrightshire)
Clark – Faulds – Cuthbertson – Bryson – Wilson: (Ayrshire & Renfrewshire)
Neale – Cater – Kinder - Harrison: (Warwickshire & Queensland)
Roberts - Spry: (Cornwall, Middlesex & Queensland)
Munster: (Schleswig-Holstein & Queensland) and Plate: (Braunschweig, Neubruck & Queensland & New York)

All video files are a container. They contain a video stream and an audio stream.
For example, the video stream might be encoded as avi, mov, flv, quicktime, mkv or webm
and the audio stream as mp3, AAC, wav, pcm, ogg vorbis, monkeysaudio.
The final container might include any combination of these.
The playback device must have the codecs installed to enable playback of the video/audio stream.

You could try VLC which will show you what codecs (video and audio) are used in the 'frog' file or
you could try an online program using the search terms 'separate audio from video file'.
This will discard the video part of the file and keep the audio part.

You should then be able to separate the audio from the video.

Good luck

“Audacity” is sound editing software that is totally free and works with both Windows and on a Mac.

Install the software and open the video file you want to extract the audio from.

Once it is on the Timeline from the file menu select Export and choose MP3.

Name it what you want and save it where you want and let Audacity create the file.

Job done.

Thanks for those hints . . .   :)

I will have a go at them later after I have had a good look at what I have.  I did notice that my video is labelled MP4  rather than 3.   :-\  Don't know if that makes a difference.

As your file is an MP4 that is the container which holds a video stream and an audio stream.
An MP3 is an audio file.

Here is an online convertor you could try. It may be easier than installing an audio editing program which may need many settings changed to get a good result.

   https://www.onlineconverter.com/extract-audio-from-video

The default audio file it extracts is set to MP3. Try it and see.

Good luck

Aaaaah    Now I understand.

;D  Took a couple of tries, but I have managed to do it!!    Thanks Jim.

only trouble now is . . . . . .  it runs straight into the audio of my grandson playing his cello.   .
You are helping a rank amateur here!

My next task is to try an stop that happening.  Grandson is NOT Pablo Casals    ;D ;D . . ( but he is my grandson so I like listening to him!)
When I work out how to stop the immediate change from frogs to cello, I will post the results of my education!!   Thanks for the tips.

All you have done at the moment is extract the audio from the video in it's entirety
and it need a little tidy up.

You can use the same online converter to 'cut' a section of an MP3

  https://www.onlineconverter.com/cut-mp3

You will need to make a note of the start and end time of the 'frog' chorus.
i.e. if it starts at the beginning use "from the start" if it starts at 3sec in, use the "start second"
from the drop down menu and enter the exact time to start.

Enter the time in the second box one second before the 'cellos' start under "end second"

Voila, you should have a new edited MP3 audio file.

You might consider trying it few times to get the hang of it.

The software that I quoted can be used to cut the video at the point in the video and then export as MP3.

There is another option, download DaVinci Resolve which is a free video editing App.

Once downloaded and opened, import the MP4 video file, watch it and cut it at the required point then export it as an MP3.
